Recommended Attire

With the exception of our higher level Ballet classes (see specific guidelines below), we do not enforce a strict dress code at DancEast. We do ask that all students come to class in dancewear (of any color or pattern), with hair pulled back and wearing no jewelry (non-dangling earrings are acceptable). No school clothes or “street” clothes, please!  And remember – all dance shoes (even hip-hop sneakers) should NEVER be worn outside! We discourage bared midriffs and very loose clothing in all of our dance classes, as it hinders hands-on corrections and in some cases the ability to view alignment. One exception is that loose clothing is permissible in Hip Hop.

specific Guidelines for each type of class:

My First Dance Class AND Creative Movement: Leotard and tights of any color or pattern. A dance skirt is optional. Leggings or shorts with a t-shirt or sleeveless top are great options, too. Dancers can either dance in bare feet or in ballet shoes. If a dancer would like to dance in bare feet, we suggest footless tights.

Intro to Ballet: Leotard and tights of any color or pattern. A dance skirt is optional. Boys may choose to wear a fitted shirt and shorts instead of tights, if desired. Ballet shoes are required for this class.

Ballet/Pre-tap AND Triple Threat: Leotard and tights of any color or pattern. A dance skirt is optional. Boys may choose to wear a fitted shirt and shorts instead of tights, if desired. Ballet and tap shoes are required for this class.

Tumble & Dance AND Acrobatic Dance: Leotard and footless tights or leggings of any color or pattern. Leggings or shorts with a t-shirt or sleeveless top (that can be tucked in) are great options, too. Bare feet.

Ballet I: Leotard and tights of any color or pattern. A dance skirt is optional. Boys may choose to wear a fitted shirt and shorts instead of tights, if desired. Ballet shoes are required for this class.

Modern AND Contemporary: Leotard and footless tights or leggings of any color or pattern. Boys may choose to wear a fitted shirt and shorts instead of tights or leggings, if desired. Bare feet.

Tap: Leotard and tights or leggings of any color or pattern. Leggings or shorts with a t-shirt or sleeveless top are great options, too. Tap shoes are required for this class. We do not allow character-style, high-heeled tap shoes. We prefer black tap shoes.

Jazz: Leotard and tights or leggings of any color or pattern. Boys may choose to wear a fitted shirt and shorts instead of tights or leggings, if desired. Jazz shoes are required for this class; we prefer black.

Hip Hop: Leggings/sweatpants, a t-shirt/tank top and sneakers that will only be worn on the dance floor. Converse work well. No jeans.

Ballet II and higher: Solid-colored tights (no darker than skin tone) with solid-colored leotard. Only unlined, fitted, sheer skirts that are no longer than knee length are allowed (i.e. Ballet wrap skirts). Fitted warm-up sweaters and legwarmers are allowed. Hair MUST be off the face and off the neck. Boys should wear very fitted tanks or tees with tights, leggings or very fitted shorts. Ballet shoes are required.
